About the author... Who is Ignacio Palacios?

When it comes to photography and travel, few can rival Ignacio Palacios’ experience, skill, and passion. A third-generation photographer, Ignacio has been honoured with over 100 prestigious photography prizes and awards from around the world and has travelled to over 90 countries in his 20 years career. It’s little wonder he’s developed a reputation as a leading photographer in the fields of travel, landscape, and nature photography.

Born in Spain, Ignacio now calls Sydney, Australia home – though his unmistakable Spanish spirit continues to influence his work and define his signature style.

Combining his love of travel and photography has proved a powerful combination, and today Ignacio leads some of the world’s best photography tours to incredible destinations around the world. As an AIPP double Master of Photography, Ignacio shares his insight, experience, and technique with his clients to help them find their own success and joy on their photographic journey.

A Word From The Author

I often reiterate that one of the most important elements that helped me on my photographic journey to becoming a successful professional Travel, Landscape and Wildlife Photographer, has been to enter photography competitions. In the early days, as an amateur photographer, I entered competitions at the local camera club level. My submissions often failed, and I had no understanding as to why. I loved those images; I was emotionally connected to those images - what was the problem? It was a frustrating experience, yet the whole process actually ignited my passion to learn and drove me to find out why I was failing from a judge’s perspective and how I could improve.

The process of selecting, post-processing, printing, entering competitions and continually failing was a great experience on many levels - for me anyway. In the early stages of my career, photography was all about learning, and competitions gave me the opportunity to assess and objectively judge my work against the work of others (winners and finalists). Photography competitions may assist in giving you direction and push you out of your comfort zone, focusing your mind on perfection and leading you to great inspiration. The entire process has helped me to improve my confidence, style & vision and to cultivate instincts to know which creative risks to take to create stronger images and tell better stories through my work.

To this very day, I still enter a handful of yearly photographic competitions, to continue to push my craft.  I really enjoy the thrill and the quality of the live judging process at the Australian Professional Photography Awards and the WPPI in the USA - standout events on my photography calendar. I try to enter only the most prestigious competitions nowadays. Having your photographic efforts validated and recognised by your peers is a reminder that you continue to remain with your eyes on the ball, an additional positive to what is already a very rewarding and enjoyable pastime and career.
