║ Rediscovering Spain
17 November 2014
I am rediscovering Spain and Europe. I love it. I am having such a great time photographing its wild Cantabric coast, my own home town and the little villages around it. When I was living in Australia, I used to say that Europe was boring….I was completely wrong. I have been very fortunate to visit nearly every country in Europe but when I left I wanted to photograph different landscapes, different cultures… Now I am looking at Spain/Europe with different eyes… Yes, it is very different than Australia but it also has amazing landscapes. And other amazing subjects to photograph.
I have spent the last few weekends shooting around the North Coast near San Sebastian, Bilbao and Santander. This is a night photograph of a “Casa Rural” in Navarra, where we were staying this weekend.
As well as shooting as much as I can around here, I am studying my second degree in Photography in one of the most amazing photography galleries and schools of Spain. This happens to be in a small town called Logrono: my own home town!!
Casa de la Imagen is one of the first specialized photo galleries in the Spanish history and his teachers, Jesus Rodriquez Rocandio and Santiago know everything about photography. Jesus is an institution in Spain, in particular in large format / film photography. He has exhibited in more than 100 galleries and published many books about photography. I think that I‘ve not met anyone who knows as much about photography as he does. I am certainly taking it all in.
He is teaching a Masters in Photography and I am loving it. Under his tuition, I am getting back into film photography and starting to use large format cameras. I have bought a Rollei 35 film camera and a Linhoff large format is in my radar…
I am also learning some processes that my father used to show me like cyanotypes and platinotypes. And reading again about the history of photography I am re-discovering new artists. Some of them classics like Garry Winnogrand, Harry Callahan, William Klein, Dorothea Lange, Weegee, Eugene Smith, Walker Evans, August Sander, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Richard Avedon and many more… Yes, I am loving my time here !
