Head On / Add On Festivals in Sydney

Last Friday Paul Hoelen Adam Williams and I had an awesome night at the magnificent Head On Photo Festival Event. Great images and very well set up. This year I was again lucky to get a place within 20 talented finalists. Congrats to my friend Paul Hoelen of The Light Collective to win the second place of this prestigious competition. He is also featuring an exhibition in Sydney as part of the Head On festival titled ‘Altered lands’ with another couple of aerial photography icons in Australia: Scott McCook and Sheldon Pettit. If you are in Sydney go and enjoy this exhibition with great imagery. Customs House, Circular Quay. Spread the word. I am also participating with an image in the Add On exhibition for the first time. Exciting week!

12 Great International Photo Contests you should enter in 2016

Amateur and professional photographers enter photography competitions for different reasons. Some look for recognition in the most important contests, some are looking to earn a bit of cashand others simply enter to learn and to have some fun! Most of us are actually after all of those.

One of the most important things that has helped me to create fine art images has been to enter photography competitions. In the early days of my photographic career, I entered a few photography club competitions, both in Spain and Australia. I submitted images that I loved but most of the times, they didn’t do it well and I was wondering why… T

Patagonia workshops with Luminous Landscape, Kevin Raber and Art Wolfe

Just finished a terrific workshop with Art Wolfe and Kevin Raber in Torres Del Paine, Chile and Perito Moreno, Mt. Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre, in Parque Nacional los Glaciares, Argentina. We had a great group of photographers with some amazing talent. The weather was beyond perfect as we had 2 weeks of incredible light. All of us are returning with a lot of really nice images. Some I have already posted, many more to come. We leave tomorrow for a 2 week workshop in Atacama, Chile where we should be able to take some more terrific images.

Travel plans for 2016-2017

The next 12 months are going to be fun. Some of those flight paths to South America and Europe are overlapping. Two trips to Europe and back to Sydney + Two trips to South America and back to Sydney. I think I am taking a sabbatical in 2018 to retouch the 50000+ files I haven’t even opened yet since June 2014 when I started traveling with my family (+ plus the ones I will take in the next 12 months…)

35 Spanish Photographers that you should follow

The photographers listed below produce very interesting landscape work. They all have very different styles, belong to different generations and have different views regarding what is photography. I am just presenting what I think is a good mixture of Spanish landscape photographers and if you have the time you should go to their websites and have a good look at their work for inspiration.

Travel Photographer of the Year 2015 - Highly Commended

The judging procedure for the Travel Photographer of the Year 2015 competition ‪has been concluded, entries from over 110 countries and wow, this competition is getting tougher and tougher every year!!. I am very happy to have be a finalist in one of the categories with a shot taken in Spain. I am also stoked that the image received a highly commended award.

| | Paine Grande, Patagonia

Paine Grande, Patagonia

This is an image of Paine Grande in Patagonia (Chile). Paine Grande is the hightest of the peaks and less photographed than “The Horns” and “The Towers”. The image is a creation that I did for the Australian Professional Photography Awards and it went through a very interesting process to become the final image printed for the awards.

I took the photograph from a boat during a photography workshop using a Medium format Pentax 645D and a 300mm f4 lens. It was taken at midday (actually none of my entries were taken either at sunset or sunrise) and when I looked at it at home I liked it but I did not love it and I certainly didn’t think that it was an image that could do well in this competition.

APPAs 2015 - Chamonix Climbers

The APPAs (Australian Professional Photography Awards) are over and I am very happy with the results of a really tough year. I posted the four images on facebook and a lot of people have asked about this particular image and so I thought it would be good to tell the story.

I didn’t take this image from a helicopter, plane or from a drone but from a cable car in Chamonix in the French Alps. I was traveling with my family around Europe and went there by chance… Chamonix is a ski resort and I was really impressed that you can actually see one of its glaciers from the town.

Australian Professional Photography Awards 2015

Very happy with my APPA results this year. 4 more points towards achieving the Master M.Photog which I hope to get next year. I watched part of the judging and it looks like it was very tough to get gold… I am very happy because for each print the scores were very consistent and because each year I get a bit closer … I hope I can get the elusive gold next year…
Thanks so much to everyone who helped me select the images and for making comments to improve them. I always struggle. In particular I would like to thank Adam Williams, Ricardo Da Cunha, Luke Austin and Paul Hoelen of The Light Collective TLC Group for your comments and help with this. You guys rock and inspire me with your creativity.

Finland frozen trees post-processing

Diego Lopez of Wildphotoscape sent me the RAW file of a great image that he took in Lapland this winter. He wanted me to try and do my version.

Diego is one of the best nature and landscape photographers in Spain but his “policy” is to apply only minor adjustments with his RAW processing software (Capture NX) and Photoshop.

Image Manipulation

All arts have always involved some level of manipulation; be it painting, writing, drawing, stone carving etc., they all involve manipulation. Creation involves choices and decisions and interpretation. One hundred years ago the discussion was if photographers were artists but the discussion these days seems to be the other way round. Are artists photographers?

Very very happy that my image of a Geyser taken in the Atacama Desert (Tatio Geysers) has made the cover of the Travel Photographer of the Year book this year. This is my favorite photography competition. It was my fourth year entering and it is very special for me to have this image on the cover of a great book made of photographs selected in this competition.

Salar de Uyuni wins LUX GOLD

I can now announce that I am very very stoked, humbled and happy to say that I have won the LUX GOLD AWARD in the landscape and nature category in Spain. This is a national prize and one of the most important awards you can get in professional photography here. When I came back to Spain a few weeks ago I decided to join the AFP (Asociación Fotógrafos Profesionales) and they encouraged me to enter. It was my first time!. I am so happy to have won an award with a photograph of El Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, a place that I absolutely love.

Rediscovering Spain

I am rediscovering Spain and Europe. I love it. I am having such a great time photographing its wild Cantabric coast, my own home town and the little villages around it. When I was living in Australia, I used to say that Europe was boring….I was completely wrong. I have been very fortunate to visit nearly every country in Europe but when I left I wanted to photograph different landscapes, different cultures… Now I am looking at Spain/Europe with different eyes… Yes, it is very different than Australia but it also has amazing landscapes

Into the wild - Glacier bay, Alaska

CRUISING GLACIER BAY

A few months ago I went on a cruise along the beautiful coastline of Alaska with my family. It was my first time in this part of the world and I absolutely loved it. The photograph below was taken in Glacier Bay National Park which is a highlight of Alaska’s Inside Passage. Glacier Bay has many lagoons, islands, and channels with rare wildlife and visual treats such as glaciers, temperate rainforest, wild coastlines, fjords and incredible waterfalls and mountains.

A different landscape photography experience

Last time I was in Utah and Arizona about seven years ago I missed this place (among a few other incredible places that I continuously discover around this part of the world). I had seen some amazing photographs of the Antelope Canyon from Alain Briot and other American photographers and I put it on my list of “next places to visit and photograph”.

Well, perhaps this is the first time I have ever said something like this about a great landscape photography location but it wasn’t a very pleasant experience.

Fuji X-T1 body Prize

An awesome Fuji X-T1 body will be given as a prize to one of the twelve participants in each of our three Photography Workshops in South America next year. I have recently bought this camera and it is amazing. It is absolutely perfect to complement the Pentax 645D whilst traveling, especially for people and documentary photos where the key is to capture the decisive instant when all elements in the scene suddenly come together
