A lonely tree grows on the sand dunes at Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, Brazil
$500 – $5,000
Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is made up largely of an undulating range of exquisitely shaped white sand dunes and though from all outward appearances it presents as a desert, in reality it is far from it. The region is actually subjected to a regular rainy season, in part due to its proximity being so close to the Amazon basin.
During one of my flights, amongst the expanse of the undulating dune fields, I noticed out of the corner of my eye a small palm tree just large enough to make its presence known. I almost missed it altogether as it was so small and isolated, but ultimately, I feel that it is this very aspect – its survival in the middle of this otherwise barren looking landscape – that adds a special emotive quality and distinct narrative to the image. This image is dynamic, flowing, colourful and bold. Its relative simplicity belies some telling narrative hidden within it. The colour palette is a very pleasing, harmonious ingredient and the detail contained in the file up close is a delightful reward for moving beyond its wider graphic appeal to explore its gorgeous level of detail.
